Samaritans call for action on housing crisis

Rising rents are fuelling a crisis that is destroying homes in Melbourne and Sydney as people search for alternative housing.

In Melbourne, the average cost of renting is $2,900 per month, despite average incomes of just over $66,600 a year, a Melbourne Metro Housing spokeswoman said.

"The high rental prices have forced many families to take on more debt, many with no savings or savings for retirement ” all the while having no alternative for housing," Ms Nandrola said.

"In the last 12 months, rents in Melbourne have doubled, from $1,400 to $2,900.

"Many of these families and young people are relying on emergency housing, emergency rent assistance and short-term short-term rental assistance (SSRAs) by family and friends.

"This is a financial challenge that must be taken on because there is no money to make ends meet."

She said the situation had also reached crisis levels in Sydney, where the average monthly rent for a detached house rose 15.9 per cent to $1,830 a month.

The community association will have a "guaranteed income" for first-time tenant, and they're currently raising $5,000 through a Gofundme account.

"The money will go towards setting up a guaranteed income," Mrs Tait said.

"People may have to find their own apartments, but they will always have the ability to get paid to rent the flat out."
