Either legally or illegally, about a tenth of American adults will place a bet on Sunday's Super Bowl, with roughly $6 billion riding on the game between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams.

According to a new survey released by the American Gaming Association, which lobbies on behalf of the casino industry, 22.7 million Americans plan to place a wager on Super Bowl LIII.

But despite the increasing accessibility of sports gambling, the AGA study found that 1.8 million Americans plan to bet illegally through a bookie, and that does not include the millions that will be bet through offshore, online sports books.

'The interest in legal, regulated sports betting in the United States has never been higher,' AGA president and chief executive office Bill Miller said in a statement. 'More Americans than ever before will be able to place their bets with legal sportsbooks now operating in eight states, generating valuable revenue for state, local and tribal governments and increasing fan engagement with the game.

'These results, however, also point to the continued viability of the dangerous, illegal sports betting market in America,' he continued. The AGA released a study in September that claimed the NFL could earn an addition $2.3 billion annually because of legalized sports betting, primarily because more fans would be engaged with the league.

Thus far, five NFL teams have gaming industry partnerships, according to the AGA, and the NFL recently made Caesars Entertainment its official gaming sponsor.

The AGA survey was conducted by Morning Consult, and included a sample of 2,201 adults. Interviews were conducted online and were subsequently weighted to make extrapolations.

According to ESPN, MGM resorts has already taken 14 five-figure wagers on the Super Bowl, all of which were placed on the Patriots winning.���

A particularly adventurous gambler can even wager on whom the game's MVP will thank first: God (+300, meaning a winning $100 bet would yield a $300 return), teammates (+200), coach (+600), owner (+750), fans (+1000), refs (+5,000), family (+600) or none of the above (+400).
